NEWFOUND COMMUNICATIONS SELECTS PHONETIC SYSTEMS TO ESTABLISH PERFORMANCE BREAKTHROUGH IN VOICE SEARCHING EMAIL

Newfound Communications to Offer Secure Email Reader that offers Hands-Free Access to Email using Speech Recognition

SpeechTEK 2002, NEW YORK, NY, Booth # 603 - October 29, 2002

Newfound Communications, a leader in Advanced Grammar Management Technologies, today announced that it is using technology from Phonetic Systems, the leading provider of speech solutions for large or highly dynamic databases, for fast, cost-efficient, high-performance remote speech access to corporate email. With Newfound's Email Reader, users can easily access and search their email with their voice as well as reply, forward, cc, compose new mail, delete, etc. The Email Reader can be integrated with corporate databases or knowledge bases while broadening access to calendar, contacts, document stores and corporate IVR systems.

James Loeber, vice president of business development at Newfound, said, "After extensive testing of available speech solutions, we found that on dynamic and untuned vocabularies, Phonetic Systems' Voice Search Engine platform yielded consistently higher recognition results. This is vital for an email search application, where email content is constantly changing." Other speech recognizers require tuning for optimum performance, but email search does not allow for formal grammar tuning.

Historically, email reader applications have had poor navigation capabilities, with users skipping relentlessly through useless email. Newfound's Email Reader platform provides a user-friendly, highly controllable and intuitive voice interface that eliminates the problem of having to listen to every message. It enables the user to request a search by any keyword or phrase like "Board Meeting" or "John Smith". This ensures professionals aren't wasting their time listening to unsolicited commercial email (a.k.a. "spam") or less important messages and can both reduce call durations and significantly increase productivity. Additionally, the Email Reader application resides behind the firewall, keeping sensitive data secure

John McCready, vice president of product marketing at Phonetic Systems, said, "Our complementary technologies have allowed Newfound Communications' to develop an exciting application for our service provider and enterprise customers to offer secure mobile email access with voice. With the strong growth in email communications, this application will be a key piece in speech and unified messaging strategies.
